Martyr Captain Anshuman Singh Army Medical Corps Kirti Chakra : ‘It was love at first sight’ said Smriti, wife of martyr Captain Anshuman Singh, recalling her memories. She came to New Delhi last week to receive the Kirti Chakra on his behalf.This honour not only commemorates his bravery but also serves as a poignant reminder of the dedication and valour inherent in the men and women of the Indian Army. What is Mission of Captain Anshuman Singh ?
Captain Anshuman Singh’s journey of service and dedication began on 19 March 2020 when he was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps. Due to his assignment, he joined 26 Punjab Regiment as a Medical Officer where he served in Chandan Complex under Operation Meghdoot.
The night of July 19, 2023 proved to be a turning point in his career, which will be remembered for his exceptional courage and selflessness. That night, a catastrophic fire incident occurred at the sandalwood dropping zone. The officer immediately sprung into action upon hearing the alarm. Stepping out of his fibre glass hut, he found himself amidst chaos and flames.
Exhibiting quick thinking and fearless leadership, Captain Anshuman Singh managed to rescue four to five persons from a nearby fibre glass hut, which was rapidly filling with smoke and was on the verge of catching fire. His calm demeanour and clear instructions helped evacuate these persons to safety, reflecting his remarkable ability to remain calm even under pressure.
However, the crisis was not over yet. The Medical Investigation Room, a vital facility, was now engulfed in flames. Realising the urgency, Captain Singh rushed back to his hut to retrieve the medical aid box. Unfortunately, strong winds fanned the fire, causing it to spread rapidly and engulf their shelter. Despite numerous rescue efforts, they could not be saved. Their mortal remains could only be recovered after the fire was extinguished.
Captain Anshuman Singh’s actions that night exemplified unparalleled bravery and a deep sense of duty. His willingness to sacrifice his own safety for the lives of others epitomises the highest ideals of the Indian Army. In recognition of his valour and supreme sacrifice, Captain Anshuman Singh is being recommended for the prestigious Kirti Chakra (posthumous).

What is the love story of Captain Anshuman Singh and his wife?
After “love at first sight” and an eight-year long-distance relationship, they got married.
We met on the first day of college. I don’t want to be dramatic, but it was love at first sight. A month later, he got selected in AFMC (Armed Forces Medical College). We had met in an engineering college, but then he got selected in medical college. Super intelligent guy. From then on, just a month after we met, it was a long-distance relationship for eight years,” she recalled.
“Then we decided to get married. Unfortunately, within two months of the marriage, he got posted in Siachen. On July 18, we had a long conversation about what our lives would be like in the next 50 years. We were going to build a house, we would have kids, and so much more. On the morning of the 19th (last year), I woke up and got a call that he was no more,” Smriti said.
She said she has not been able to come to terms with the loss till date.
“For the first seven-eight hours, we could not accept that something like this had happened. Till date, I have not been able to come to terms with it. I am just trying to think that maybe it is not true.”
“But now that I have the Kirti Chakra in my hand, I realise that it is true. But it doesn’t matter, he is a hero. We can handle our lives a little because he has handled a lot. Martyr Captain Anshuman Singh Army Medical Corps Kirti Chakra He sacrificed his life and family so that the other three families could survive,” the proud wife said.
