The Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, PVSM, AVSM, currently serving as the Vice Chief of Army Staff, as the next Chief of Army Staff with effect from the afternoon of June 30, 2024. The current Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pandey, PVSM, AVSM, VSM will step down on June 30, 2024.

Born on July 01, 1964, Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi has been serving the nation for over 40 years. He was commissioned into the Infantry (Jammu & Kashmir Rifles) of the Indian Army on December 15, 1984. He has held various command, staff, instructional and overseas appointments. His command appointments include Regiment (18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles), Brigade (26 Sector Assam Rifles), Inspector General, Assam Rifles (East) and 9 Corps. He has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and three GOC-in-C Commendation Cards.
