Sitaram Yechury in critical condition, on respiratory support in AIIMS: CPI(M) 2024

Sitaram Yechury in critical condition : CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury is in a critical condition and is being put on respiratory support at AIIMS in New Delhi, the party said on Tuesday. The 72-year-old politician is being treated for acute respiratory infection in the ICU of the hospital. The party said a team of doctors is closely monitoring Yechury’s condition. He was admitted to AIIMS on August 19 for treatment of a pneumonia-like chest infection.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) said in a post on Twitter, “Comrade Sitaram Yechury, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) is in the Intensive Care Unit of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, where he is being treated for acute respiratory tract infection.

“He is being put on respiratory support. A multi-disciplinary team of doctors is closely monitoring his condition, which is currently critical,” the party statement said. Yechury recently underwent cataract surgery. On August 22, Yechury posted a six-minute video on his social media account from the hospital, offering his condolences to former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya.

Sitaram Yechury became a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1975, soon after joining the Students Federation of India (SFI) in 1974.

During the Emergency, when he was still a student at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Yechury was detained. He also served as president of the JNU Students Union on three separate occasions between 1977 and 1988.

Along with Prakash Karat, Yechury played a key role in increasing Left influence in JNU. At 72, he is known for continuing the coalition-building efforts established by former general secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet.
