IPS officer who took over as DGP of Jammu and Kashmir : The IPS officer takes over in Jammu and Kashmir at a time when militancy is emerging as a major challenge in the wake of attacks being carried out by terrorists having combat-skills trained in jungle warfare. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday (August 15, 2024) appointed Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Nalin Prabhat as Special Director General (SDG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Who is Nalin Prabhat ?

Nalin Prabhat was born on March 14, 1968 in Thungri village of Manali, Himachal Pradesh. He obtained BA (Hons) and MA degrees from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. Prabhat, a 1992 batch IPS officer, has considerable experience in anti-terrorism operations. He has led Greyhounds, a premier anti-Naxal unit in Andhra Pradesh. 55-year-old Prabhat has been serving as the NSG DG since April 2024.

His career has been marked by several awards, including three Police Gallantry Medals and the Parakram Medal. His appointment comes at a crucial time when there has been a rise in terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir, including recent encounters and violent clashes like the attack on an Army convoy in Kathua and clashes in Doda and Udhampur.

This year, more than 20 soldiers have been martyred in the region and more than a dozen civilian casualties have been reported. Prabhat’s strategic approach towards law enforcement is expected to bring a new dynamism to the security scenario in the region.

Before joining the NSG, Prabhat had overseen the formation of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Jammu and Kashmir, as its Special Director General and Additional Director General.

Earlier, among other posts, he served as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for Kashmir and South Kashmir regions.

Mr. Prabhat will take over as Director General of Police (DGP), Jammu and Kashmir from October this year. The Home Ministry order said, “Consequent upon joining the AGMUT [Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories] cadre on inter-cadre deputation from Andhra Pradesh cadre, Mr. Nalin Prabhat, IPS (AP:1992) is posted as Special Director General (SDG), Jammu and Kashmir Police in Jammu and Kashmir with immediate effect and up to 30.09.2024.” The order said Mr Prabhat has also been appointed as the DGP of Jammu and Kashmir from October 1. IPS officer who took over as DGP of Jammu and Kashmir He will replace R.R. Swain (IPS), who will retire on attaining superannuation on September 30 this year.

Mr Swain was appointed Additional Director General of Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Jammu and Kashmir in 2020 after the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was revoked by the Central government in August 2019. Mr Swain had also held the post of Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir. Over 18 shootouts have been reported in Jammu and Kashmir since June this year.

Mr Prabhat is considered an old hand of militancy in Kashmir, and had earned goodwill within the security forces during his postings in Jammu and Kashmir in the past. He has already served as Deputy Inspector General in South Kashmir, Ops Range and Srinagar Sector of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

He has also served as Inspector General in Kashmir, Ops Sector of CRPF. He was lauded by the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir for his handling of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir. For his work, he was awarded the Internal Security Service Medal and the Police (Special Duty) Medal and Bar in Jammu and Kashmir.
