“I think I played really well today. Obviously, if you want to beat Daniil, you have to play at a high level of tennis, you have to be very fast. Today I felt very good on the court again, which made me very happy. I think I couldn’t have played a better semifinal, which allowed me to reach the final in the best possible way. I’m very, very happy to be able to play my first final in Beijing.”
Who do you prefer in the final? Sinner or Bu Yuanchao?
“It’s obvious that Bu (smiles). I won’t lie to you. Jannik is the best player in the world at the moment. Bu has been playing great tennis all week, beating great players; if I had to choose who is better to face in the final, if I wanted to win it, it would be Bu. “To be honest, I was very surprised to go onto the court and see that the court was almost full. Being Tuesday, the stands were full… I was very happy to see so many people. When I face Daniil we both play great tennis, with great rallies, and I think that’s something that people really enjoy. Because of that, people start watching the match: I think we show a mix of everything, with good rallies, good defence, great attacks, a good mix. It’s fantastic for the audience. I really enjoyed the atmosphere today, hopefully I’ll be able to feel that energy again in the final.”
Staying calm after being given two consecutive counterbreaks by Medvedev
“In those moments I just try to stay there. I broke him twice in the first set, but he broke me back. I was just thinking, ‘OK, let’s move on.’ Maybe that time I didn’t hit a few first serves, I made a few mistakes from the baseline that I shouldn’t have made. But that’s okay – I knew what I had to do, I had to continue playing my tennis, that the opportunities would come again.
That’s what I was thinking when he was breaking me. I always try to push him to the limit, force him to run from side to side, impose my style.
